San Diego ID Law – Civil Rights

San Diego Police officer’s practice of racial profiling was challenged by Edward Lawson after he was personally subjected to 15 encounters of this nature over an 18 month period of time.

His story is told in the video below. Unfortunately Mr. Lawson lost his life to pancreatic cancer in 2011. But I can’t help but think that this story shall live on in our history books and he shall be remembered for his valiant efforts to defend basic civil rights and bring awareness to the prejudices that are still scouring our country today.

This case is of historical importance not only because the California statute was voided, but also because it is one of the few examples of an ordinary citizen successfully representing himself all the way through a U.S. District Court and on through to the U.S. Supreme Court where he did finally get some collaboration.
